Leather furniture is a luxury. It is considered so because of its smooth beautiful finish, how comfortable it is, and because of its price. Yes. Leather furniture is expensive. This is why people get really upset when it gets stained, wet, or dirty, which is something very difficult to avoid if in a household with pets or children. Because of these reasons, some designers recommend faux leather furniture to those on a budget or to those who have kids.
Originally, faux leather was made with a very hot and sticky material. This made it a turn-off when compared to the real thing. These days, however, manufacturers have developed new products, using plastic or rubber coated fabric to mimic leather. It is no longer hot and sticky. Unfortunately, manufacturers cannot mimic the leather smell many people look for.
Despite the advances in manufacturing technology, faux leather is still much cheaper than real leather. Usually, a piece of furniture made in faux leather will be half the price of its genuine leather counterpart. This is because it acts a lot like fabric in the way it can be rolled, cut, and sewn, so it is priced like fabric.
Another perk is that it comes in many different colors. In fact, faux leather is better at getting purer and more even colors because the manufacturers are not working with hide. Usually, darker colors look better and more like real leather, and it is UV fade resistant, which means you don't have to worry about leaving it out in the sun. The material also lends itself to graphic patterns, which can be great for design.
Unlike real leather, faux leather is also much easier to maintain. First of all it is more stain resistant than leather, and it is not damaged by liquids. It doesn't need any extra treatment or special cleaners. It can be cleaned using regular cleaning products. Usually a mild soap and water solution applied with a soft cloth will work. Being easy to clean makes this material the perfect substitute for leather, especially for people who have children, animals, or plan on using the furniture in a commercial space, like an office.
Faux leather furniture looks like the real thing, and it lasts many years (though not as long as real leather), and you can worry about it a lot less, making it something that should definitely be considered!
